Attorney Bio
James L. Phillips, Jr., Esq. brings more than 15 years of legal experience to his role as litigation attorney in the Newport News office of Melone Hatley, P.C. His career has been dedicated to helping clients navigate complex family law matters, criminal defense, and estate planning issues, with extensive courtroom experience throughout the Tidewater and Piedmont regions of Virginia.
Over the course of his career, James has served as lead counsel in highly contested civil and criminal matters. His wide-ranging practice includes divorce, custody and visitation, support, protective orders, and juvenile representation, as well as work in trusts and estates and landlord-tenant law. He is also a certified Guardian ad Litem. Before joining Melone Hatley, James practiced with several respected firms across Hampton and Newport News.
James earned his Juris Doctor from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. Beyond the courtroom, James has been a dedicated leader in the Hampton community, serving as President of the Hampton Rotary Club, chairing the Board of Directors for Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions, Inc. (H.E.L.P), and serving on the Board of Directors for the Hampton Family YMCA. His commitment to service reflects the same values of dedication and compassion that he brings to his clients.
