Attorney Bio
R. Scott Herbert, Esq. is a family law and litigation attorney in the Richmond office of Melone Hatley, P.C., where he applies a wealth of legal experience to guide clients through emotionally charged and high-stakes family law matters. With a background that spans state government, regulatory law, civil litigation, and military service, Scott brings a calm, analytical, and solutions-oriented approach to complex cases.
Scott’s legal career includes serving as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia, where he represented the interests of consumers and small businesses in regulatory disputes involving insurance companies and utilities. He also represented clients in workers’ compensation matters and other civil litigation claims, allowing him to sharpen his ability to navigate complex legal frameworks and tailor representation to meet each client’s unique needs.
Now focused on family law, his broad-based experience gives him a strong foundation for litigation strategy, persuasive advocacy, and creative problem-solving in family law matters. He is known for his methodical preparation, thoughtful advocacy, and unwavering commitment to helping clients achieve fair and lasting legal outcomes.
Scott earned both his J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from William & Mary, where he was named a Center for the Study of Law and Markets Fellow. He also holds a B.A. in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland. Before becoming an attorney, Scott served in the United States Marine Corps, graduating first in his class as a Fire Direction Controlman and earning a Secret-level security clearance. This experience instills the discipline and leadership he carries into his legal practice today.
